John Bottomley serves as Senior Lecturer in Tuba & Euphonium at the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Department of Music and Dance since 2009, maintaining an active dual career as educator and orchestral/chamber musician with ensembles including Cincinnati Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and Albany Symphony.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Musical Arts from The Ohio State University (studied under Jim Akins)
- Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music (studied with Toby Hanks)
- Bachelor of Music from University of Wisconsin-Madison (studied with John Stevens)
Specializing in brass performance pedagogy, Bottomley focuses on tuba/euphonium technique development within orchestral contexts and chamber ensemble coaching. His educational philosophy emphasizes practical performance skills combined with historical repertoire knowledge, demonstrated through summer programs at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute and Lutheran Summer Music Academy.
