Dr. Alex Avila serves as Lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music, having previously held a Visiting Assistant Professor position at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. His international career spans solo performances, chamber music, and pedagogy with specialization in tuba and euphonium doubling.
His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in music education from The University of Georgia and graduate performance degrees in euphonium and tuba from The University of Texas at Austin. Research interests focus on:
- Low brass performance techniques
- Cross-genre musical interpretation
- Chamber ensemble innovation
- Music pedagogy for brass instruments
Professional recognition includes:
- Gold medal at Falcone Festival Competition
- Multiple regional/national competition placements
As an educator, his students have achieved success in Falcone and MTNA competitions, pursuing careers as music educators, professors, and performers. He maintains active performance partnerships including orchestral engagements with Austin Symphony Orchestra and chamber work with FivE euphonium quartet and Isomer Quartet, where he explores genre-blending concepts and low-brass repertoire expansion.
