John Bear Mitchell is a Lecturer of Wabanaki Studies and Multicultural Studies at the University of Maine, and serves as the Native American Waiver and Educational Program Coordinator for the University of Maine System Office, as well as the Wabanaki Center Outreach and Student Development Coordinator. He is a member of the Penobscot Nation from Indian Island, Maine.
His expertise focuses on Indigenous education, cultural preservation, and community engagement. Over 15 years, he conducted educational outreach through storytelling and arts programs in over 150 Maine schools as a Maine Touring Artist. He has also collaborated with museums, educational boards, and media outlets, featuring in PBS documentaries, tribal awareness videos, and independent films about Maine’s Native people.
Mitchell’s work bridges academic and community settings, emphasizing Wabanaki cultural heritage and educational equity. He is affiliated with the University of Maine’s Native American Programs and Wabanaki Center, located at Corbett Hall.
