Darren Ranco is a Professor of Anthropology and Chair of Native American Programs at the University of Maine. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Anthropology, the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, and Native American Programs. His work focuses on indigenous resistance to environmental destruction, critiques of colonial state knowledge systems, and fostering equitable research relationships between universities and Indigenous communities.
Education: Ph.D., Harvard University (2000); MSEL in Environmental Law, Vermont Law School (1998); B.A., Anthropology and Classical Studies, Dartmouth College (1993).
Research emphasizes Indigenous diplomacies, environmental justice, tribal governance, and research ethics. His publications explore topics like climate change impacts on tribal food systems, forest pest management, and decolonizing museum practices. He co-leads the Wabanaki Youth in Science (WaYS) program, integrating Indigenous knowledge with Western science.
Ranco coordinates Native American research initiatives and contributes to the Mitchell Center’s sustainability solutions. He actively addresses tribal sovereignty and environmental policy challenges, advocating for culturally responsive environmental management.
