His research focuses on three primary areas: exercise and physical activity participation across diverse populations, expectancy effects in educational and sporting contexts, and traumatic brain injury prevention in sports. Batten's work has significantly contributed to understanding how reputation information influences both educational assessment practices and athletic performance.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on sports safety issues, particularly concussion prevention and injury risk in youth sports. His 2016-2018 work demonstrates increasing focus on policy implications of sports medicine research, with multiple publications addressing rugby safety in educational settings and football (soccer) injury prevention. His earlier work (2012-2015) shows substantial contribution to educational psychology, particularly examining how student and lecturer perceptions affect academic outcomes.
As a professional member of The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) since 2007, Dr. Batten serves as an expert reviewer for multiple academic journals including the Journal of Physical Activity & Health, Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Leisure Studies, and the Journal of Sports Sciences.

Dr. Batten has successfully secured numerous research grants totaling over £68,000 since 2008, with projects spanning educational psychology ('Lecturer Reputation and Student Behaviour'), sports safety ('The Efficacy of Active Workstations'), and community health initiatives (Winchester City Council's Exercise Referral Programme). His dual focus on educational innovation and sports medicine demonstrates his interdisciplinary approach to improving both academic and athletic performance outcomes.
Beyond his research, Dr. Batten leads the Sport and Exercise Sciences subject group, shaping curriculum development and academic direction for the department while maintaining active research collaborations with institutions including the University of Worcester.
