Dr. Matthew Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Winchester, appointed in 2018 and currently subject lead for the BSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Previously a primary school teacher, he holds an MSc from Bangor University and a PhD from the University of Chichester. His expertise spans social psychology within sport, focusing on leadership, group dynamics, and mental health in athletes. He supervises qualitative research on team leadership, conflict resolution, and the psychological impacts of head injuries in sport.
Research interests include athlete mental health (especially in esports), effective coaching behaviors, and qualitative methodologies like ethnodrama and autobiographical analysis. He has organized international conferences on qualitative sport research and advocates for innovative feedback practices in education.
Recent work examines remote coaching efficacy, stroke rehabilitation programs, and the experiences of families affected by neurodegenerative diseases in sport. His interdisciplinary approach bridges sport science, psychology, and education, with publications in Healthcare, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, and Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise, and Health.
