John Amis is the Chair in Strategic Management & Organisation at the University of Edinburgh Business School since July 2013. He earned his PhD from the University of Alberta and previously served in the Department of Management at the University of Memphis. At Edinburgh, he leads the Strategy Group, co-directs the Centre for Strategic Leadership, and has held key administrative roles, including Doctoral Programme Director and EGOS Colloquium Chair.
- Research Focus: Organizational Change, Institutional Change, Social Enterprise, and Leadership.
- Consulting: Collaborated with Scottish Enterprise, National Trust for Scotland, and Fortune 500 companies like FedEx and AutoZone.
His scholarly work, spanning over 80 publications, explores how organizations adopt new practices across public, private, and voluntary sectors. Recent studies include social enterprises addressing homelessness in Scotland, civil justice system reform, and the European migration crisis. His research often integrates institutional theory and organizational identity frameworks.
Scientific awards include the Academy of Management’s Best Published Paper Award (2022), multiple Best Paper awards, and the University of Memphis’ Distinguished Teaching Award. He serves as Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review and editorial board member for several journals.
