Johanna Mair

Johanna Mair is a Professor of Organization, Strategy, and Leadership at the Hertie School in Berlin. Her research focuses on how organizations drive economic, social, and political progress, particularly through social innovation and hybrid models of organizing. She holds affiliations as a Distinguished Fellow at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and Academic Editor of the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Her leadership includes co-directing the Global Innovation for Impact Lab and previously co-leading the Social Innovation + Change Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School.

Education: Earned her PhD in Management from INSEAD after working in executive roles in international banking. Professional Experience: Served as faculty at IESE Business School, with visiting roles at Harvard Business School and INSEAD. Her work bridges academia and practice, advising governments, companies, and social impact investors.

Research Interests: Social entrepreneurship, scaling for impact, institutional analysis of hybrid organizations, and the role of organizations in systemic societal change. Key Projects include the SEFORIS initiative exploring social enterprise roles in inclusive societies and the Knowledge Initiative on Organizations and Society (KIOS).

Recognition: Named a 'Faculty Pioneer' in Social Entrepreneurship Education by the Aspen Institute (2008). Her award-winning research spans books and top journals, addressing themes like organizational diversity, sustainability governance, and innovation pathologies.

Teaching: Offers courses such as 'Power & Influence: Leadership in Action' and 'Social Innovation for Public Purpose' in the Executive MPA program. Active in policy labs and open innovation initiatives like #WirVsVirus hackathons.
