Dr. Joe Hicks is a Lecturer in Medical Statistics at the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, part of the University of Leeds' School of Medicine. He joined the Centre in 2015 after completing his PhD in Population and Community Ecology at the University of Leeds (2015). His research focuses on improving public health, health services, and health systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a particular emphasis on applying robust quantitative methods to address challenges in these contexts. He currently co-supervises a PhD student, Emmanuel Leshak, on psycho-social impacts of community-based tuberculosis management in Nigeria.

His research interests include antimicrobial resistance, communicable and non-communicable disease care, and health system responsiveness. He leads major projects like CHORUS (funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), which focuses on urban health systems for the urban poor in LMICs, and COSTAR (funded by the Medical Research Council), exploring community dialogues to combat antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Teaching and supervision roles include quantitative methods instruction and project supervision on Nuffield Centre degree programs. He is affiliated with the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and the Nuffield Centre’s research initiatives.
