Professor Tim Ensor is a leading academic in international health systems research at the University of Leeds, serving as former Head of the Nuffield Centre for International Health & Development. He holds a PhD in Economics and has over 30 years of experience in global health economics, focusing on health financing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). His expertise spans health system efficiency, urban health systems, maternal care financing, and informal healthcare economies.
Education: BSc Economics, MA Development Economics, PhD Economics.
Research Interests:
- Urban health systems and equity in service provision.
- Informal healthcare markets and unofficial payments.
- Maternal care financing and risk-sharing mechanisms.
- Quasi-experimental evaluations of health policies in Cambodia, Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Nepal.
- Equity analysis of public health subsidies and universal health coverage transitions.
Advisory Roles: Consultant to the World Bank, EU, FCDO, WHO, and Swiss Development Cooperation. Member of UK NIHR Global Health Policy Committee and Swiss R4D grant panel.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development and the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. Supervises postgraduate researchers exploring health systems in diverse contexts.
