Dr. Joe Garrihy is an Associate Professor of Criminology at Maynooth University’s School of Law and Criminology. His research focuses on penology, prison cultures, penal policy, and reintegration pathways for people with convictions. He holds a PhD in Criminology from University College Dublin, examining prison officers’ occupational identities. Current projects include studying prison in-reach services (SPIRS), reforming higher education admissions for convicts (Unlocking Potential), and exploring employer attitudes toward hiring convicts. He collaborates with organizations like the Irish Penal Reform Trust and has secured grants from the Irish Research Council and Human Rights Commission. His work appears in journals like the British Journal of Criminology and the European Journal of Criminology.
Education: PhD in Criminology (UCD). Research interests include prison officer cultures, minority ethnic prisoner rights, and cocooning during COVID-19. Teaching modules include Punishment & Penal Policy, Comparative Penal Policy, and Intro to Criminal Justice. He advises on policy reforms and sits on committees for internationalization and early-career research.
Key projects include studying foreign national prisoners’ rights, employer hiring biases, and prison service-user feedback. His work emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches and co-production with penal institutions.
