Anastasia Karamalidou is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), part of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. She has held academic roles since 2005, including positions at Middlesex University and the University of East London. Her research focuses on prison systems, punishment models, human rights, and psychosocial criminology. She leads modules on Prisons, Punishment and Human Rights, and co-leads Contemporary Perspectives in Criminology. She is also Employability Lead for Criminology at UWE.
Her expertise spans comparative penology, mental health in prisons, and the intersection of incarceration with gender and human rights. Key publications include analyses of prison conditions in England/Wales and the Netherlands, emphasizing human rights compliance and penal reform.
Outside academia, she trains as an adult psychoanalytic psychotherapist, integrating clinical insights into her criminological work.
