Cormac Behan is a Lecturer in Criminology at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University, effective from August 2024. He previously held academic roles at Technological University Dublin, the University of Sheffield, and University College Dublin. Before entering academia, he taught history and politics in Irish prisons for 14 years. His research focuses on penal history, penology, comparative penal policy, prison education, and the intersection of citizenship and imprisonment.
Behan holds a BA in History and Politics from University College Dublin (UCD), an M.Litt. in History from Trinity College Dublin, and a MA in Adult and Community Education from Maynooth University. His PhD from UCD’s Institute of Criminology was conducted as an Ad Astra Scholar. He became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2016.
His publications include the 2023 co-authored book Prisons and Imprisonment and the 2014 monograph Citizen Convicts: Prisoners, Politics and the Vote. His work spans prisoner voting rights, penal reform movements, and the historical analysis of carceral systems. Recent research emphasizes the reframing of citizenship within incarceration contexts and comparative penal policy frameworks.
