Claire Hamilton is a Professor of Criminology and Head of Criminology in the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University. Prior to her academic career, she practised as a barrister in criminal law until 2004. She has held positions at Dublin Institute of Technology and Queen’s University Belfast, and served as a visiting scholar at institutions including the Vera Institute of Justice, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Oxford University’s Centre for Criminology, and Griffith Criminology Institute.
Her research focuses on penology, comparative criminal justice, and the interplay between security, rights, and counter-terrorism. She has published extensively in journals like the British Journal of Criminology and Punishment & Society, and co-edited influential works such as the Research Handbook of Comparative Criminal Justice (2022). Her work has been funded by organizations including the British Academy, European Commission, and Irish Research Council.
Professor Hamilton holds the title of Fulbright-Schuman Scholar (2014) and Government of Ireland Research Scholar (2001). She is actively involved in editorial roles, including co-editing the Routledge Advances in Criminology series and serving on the International Journal of Law in Context board. She also contributes to policy advisory roles, including the Research Advisory Group at the Department of Justice.
Her teaching interests emphasize comparative criminology and counter-terrorism. She has led numerous research projects, such as 'Unlocking Potential: Developing a Fair Approach to Higher Education Applicants with Criminal Records' (2020) and 'CONTAGION: Counterterrorism, Coercion and EU Criminal Justice Policy' (2016–2017). She advises students like Siobhan Buckley on topics such as youth penality and criminal justice systems.
Her recent work explores themes like public confidence in policing, radical right populism, and the evolution of penal policy. She has addressed these issues in conferences and workshops, including the European Society of Criminology Annual Conference (2017–2019) and the Howard Journal of Crime and Justice symposium (2021).
