Professor Joachim Schaper holds the Established Chair of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University of Aberdeen. He previously served as a Research Fellow at Clare College, Cambridge, and taught as a Privatdozent in Old Testament at the University of Tübingen (1999–2005). Ordained into the Lutheran Church in 2000, he joined Aberdeen in 2005 as a Reader in Old Testament, becoming a Personal Chair holder in 2006. His academic leadership includes presiding over the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (I.O.S.O.T.) from 2016 to 2019 and hosting its 23rd congress in Aberdeen (2019).
His research focuses on Deuteronomy, exilic/post-exilic prophecy, the Psalms, Wisdom of Solomon, and the Septuagint. Current projects include a commentary on Leviticus for the International Critical Commentary series and a history of ancient Israel. He co-edits Forschungen zur Religion und Literatur des Alten und Neuen Testaments and co-authored the acclaimed New Cambridge History of the Bible (vol. I).
