Dr. Jiming Kong is a Professor in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, with cross-appointments in Psychiatry and the College of Pharmacy. His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), aging mechanisms, and myelination processes. He holds prestigious awards including the New Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the National Science and Technology Award for Distinguished Young Scientists of China.
Education:
- PhD in Human Anatomy, Southern Medical University (1994)
- Master of Science in Human Anatomy, Southern Medical University (1986)
- Bachelor of Science in Medicine, Southwest Medical University (1983)
- Postdoctoral fellowships in Pharmacology, Anatomy, and Biochemistry (1998–2002)

- ALS pathogenesis and therapeutic development
- Oxidative stress in neurodegeneration
- Microglial roles in myelination
- Age-related neuronal vulnerability
Grants and Labs: His lab has been continuously funded since 2002, focusing on SOD1 misfolding and myelin repair. He is affiliated with the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM).
Professional Contributions: Supervised over 130 papers, a book, and five book chapters. Active in training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
