Tiina Kauppinen is an Associate Professor in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine, affiliated with the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. She also serves as a Principal Investigator at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine and a Researcher at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). Her research focuses on microglia’s role in neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Kauppinen holds a PhD and Docent degree in neuroinflammation from the University of Eastern Finland (formerly University of Kuopio) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
- Education:
- Docent in Neuroinflammation (University of Kuopio, 2007)
- PhD in Molecular Brain Research (University of Kuopio, 2001)
- MSc in Biotechnology (University of Kuopio, 1998)
Her research themes include:
- PARP-1 signaling in microglial activation
- Microglial impact on neuroplasticity
- Gestational diabetes-induced neuroinflammation
- Therapeutic strategies for stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and brain tumors
Dr. Kauppinen has received funding from the Alzheimer Society, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and others. She has been recognized with awards including the Jordi Folch-Pi Award (2008) and American Heart Association Fellowship (2006–2007). Her lab currently seeks postdocs, graduate students, and summer interns.
Key affiliations include the PrairieNeuro Research Centre (Kleysen Institute), where she investigates mechanisms linking microglial responses to neurodegenerative diseases. Her work emphasizes translational research to translate findings into clinical applications.
