Jim Tantillo is a Lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He specializes in environmental history, environmental ethics, and the philosophy of hunting. His research explores virtue ethics, American pragmatism, and the ethics of belief, with a focus on topics like animal ethics and hunting morality. Tantillo has held leadership roles with the Tompkins County SPCA, Historic Ithaca, the State Theater of Ithaca, and Orion the Hunter’s Institute. He teaches courses such as NTRES 2320 (Nature and Culture), NTRES 3320 (Introduction to Ethics and Environment), and NTRES 4330 (Applied Environmental Philosophy).

His research interests emphasize ethical frameworks in wildlife management, sport hunting’s moral dimensions, and the intersection of environmental philosophy with practical decision-making. Publications span topics from ethical judgments in wildlife fertility control to the cultural and moral aspects of hunting. Tantillo’s teaching and research reflect a commitment to integrating philosophical inquiry with real-world environmental challenges.
