Dr. Jim Reid is a Lecturer in Chemical Biology at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He serves as the Chemistry Level 4 Coordinator. His email is j.reid@sheffield.ac.uk, and he is located in the Dainton Building. Reid holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of St. Andrews (1994) and a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London. After postdoctoral roles at the University of Sheffield (1998) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, he joined the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in 2005.
His research focuses on enzyme mechanisms, particularly those involved in porphyrin biosynthesis (e.g., haem, chlorophyll). Key areas include magnesium chelatase and ferrochelatase, exploring metal ion insertion via enzymatic processes. His work addresses ATP hydrolysis coupling and enzyme-substrate interactions in these systems.
Teaching includes modules on Biological Molecules and Enzyme Catalysis at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He contributes to the Skills for Success: Enterprise Project and supervises Level 3 Literature Reviews. Reid has published extensively in biochemistry and plant science journals, with notable work on chelatase structure-function relationships and C4 photosynthesis mechanisms.
No academic awards or grants are explicitly mentioned. His research and teaching align with interdisciplinary chemical biology and enzymology, emphasizing mechanistic and structural insights into porphyrin metabolism.
