Dr. John Miller is a Senior Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Sheffield's School of English. He specializes in animal studies, ecocriticism, and postcolonial literature, with a focus on Victorian and modern texts. As President of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) UK/Ireland, co-director of the Sheffield Animal Studies Research Centre, and co-editor of Palgrave Studies in Animals and Literature, his work bridges literary analysis, environmental ethics, and cultural critique.
His research explores animal representation, empire, and ecology in Victorian literature, extending to speculative topics like in vitro meat and tattoo culture. Recent projects include Victorians in Furs: Fiction, Fashion and Activism and A Literary History of In Vitro Meat. He teaches modules on ecocriticism, radical theory, and Victorian studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Public engagement includes organizing events like Caring for Sheffield’s Woodlands and contributing to edited collections such as Weird Woods and Tales of the Tattooed. His work spans monographs, peer-reviewed articles, and collaborative projects that highlight the intersection of literature, environment, and ethics.
