Caroline Sumpter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Arts, English and Languages. She specializes in Victorian literature, culture, and science, with a focus on periodical culture, evolutionary debates, and fantasy fiction. Her research has earned her the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award (2011) and recognition for her monograph The Victorian Press and the Fairy Tale. She leads the interdisciplinary Science and Culture Research Group with colleagues from other faculties.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Literature and Science in the Nineteenth Century, Utopia/Dystopia, and the Fin de Siècle. She actively supervises PhD students in interdisciplinary areas such as literature and science, periodical culture, and speculative fiction. Her recent projects explore evolution, ethics, and journalism in the 1890s.
Sumpter has contributed to peer-reviewed journals like ELH and Victorian Studies, and her work bridges literary analysis with historical and scientific contexts. She participates in conferences and public lectures, including events on Science and Faith in Victorian Belfast.
