Dr Nick Freeman is an Associate Professor in Late Victorian Literature at Loughborough University. He is a founding member of the British Association for Victorian Studies (BAVS) and co-founder of the Cultural Currents Research Group (1870-1930). His research focuses on authorial networks, publishing histories, and popular genre evolution during the fin-de-siècle. He has held roles in adult, further, and prison education systems before joining academia. Freeman has contributed to editorial work for journals like Gothic Studies and Volupté, and co-organized major conferences such as the 2017 George Egerton Conference. Recent publications include a critical edition of Arthur Symons’ Spiritual Adventures (2017), which recontextualizes fin-de-siècle prose.
His educational background includes a BA in English from Leeds University and postgraduate studies at Bristol. Freeman’s work bridges late Victorian and modernist periods, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between literature, art, and cultural movements. His articles critically analyze topics such as occult fiction, ghost narratives, and the societal impact of 1890s cultural ruptures.
Freeman has served as an external examiner across UK universities and internationally, and his editorial contributions reflect his commitment to preserving and expanding access to underappreciated works. His research agenda continues to explore the intersections between aesthetics, morality, and cultural change in 19th-century literature.
