Professor Neil Bermel holds the position of Professor of Russian and Slavonic Studies at the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies. He has served as Head of Russian and Slavonic Studies and Head of the School of Languages and Cultures, and currently acts as Director of Research. His academic career spans roles in admissions and research leadership, alongside contributions to language policy and translation initiatives.
Bermel earned his BA from Yale University and MA/PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on grammatical variation in Czech and Russian, language regulation, and sociolinguistic projects such as the AHRC-funded 'Feast and Famine' corpus study. He has translated works by Czech authors like Pavel Kohout and Helga Weiss, merging linguistic and literary expertise.
Teaching contributions include co-authoring the Interactive Czech web course and designing courses on Czech language varieties and historical context.
