Jim McLean is an Associate Professor in the Journalism department at Concordia University, specializing in strategic political communication, sociology of news, field theory, technology and visual culture, public sphere theory, press clubs in Canada, entrepreneurship, and digital media. He holds a PhD in Communication Studies from Concordia University, an MA in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario, a BFA in Printmaking and Art History from the University of Regina, and a BA in English and History from the University of Western Ontario.
McLean's research explores intersections of media theory, political communication, and technological impacts on visual culture. His recent work focuses on press clubs in Canada, entrepreneurship in journalism, and digital media's influence on public discourse. While no scientific awards are listed, his publications span academic and policy-oriented journals, reflecting engagement with both theoretical and practical dimensions of communication studies.
He teaches core journalism courses such as Foundations of Journalistic Thought I and Critical Approaches to Journalism, alongside Broadcast Public Affairs (Documentary). McLean has been on sabbatical from June 1, 2014, to May 31, 2015, indicating ongoing scholarly activity.
