Dr. Jim Baxter is the Team Leader of the Professional Ethics Consultancy Team at the IDEA Centre (Institute for Digital Ethics and Accountability) within the University of Leeds. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Leeds and has expertise in applied ethics, moral responsibility, and professional ethics. His work bridges academic research with practical consultancy, providing ethical review, training, and commissioned research for external organizations. He contributes to teaching on IDEA’s postgraduate programs and the Business School.
Research interests include moral responsibility in psychopathy, professional ethics in healthcare and finance, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. Notable projects include a National Inquiry into Ethical Decision-Making in NHS trusts, research on integrity for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and investigations into professionalism in banking for the Banking Standards Board. He is affiliated with research groups such as the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, and Moral Psychology.
Baxter’s qualifications include a PhD and MA in Philosophy from Leeds and a BA in Philosophy from Sheffield. He maintains active roles in academic and professional networks, with a focus on translating ethical theory into real-world decision-making frameworks.
