Dr Jessica Kean is a Lecturer in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney, with a secondary role as Interdisciplinary Lecturer for the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education- Enterprise & Engagement). She holds a PhD (2015) and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (2019), and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on queer theory, feminist boys studies, non-monogamies, and domestic violence in LGBTQ+ contexts. She coordinates undergraduate curricula in the School of Humanities.
Research interests include:
- Queer theory & heteronormativity
- Non-monogamy dynamics
- Boys' cultural representations
- Gender equality policy
Recent publications analyze parenting advice books, university masculinity education, and domestic violence prevention messaging. She co-leads the Feminist Boys Studies Research Group, exploring boyhood through intersectional frameworks.
Teaching spans 'Sex, Gender, Culture', 'Intimacy & Friendship', and masculinity studies. Awards include 2022 Teaching Mentoring recognition. Current projects address co-educational schooling and evolving LGBTQ+ violence support systems.
