Jens Prüfer is a prominent academic serving as Director of the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) at Tilburg University and Professor of Economics at the University of East Anglia’s School of Economics. He also holds an Associate Professor position at Tilburg University's Department of Economics and serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Competition Policy (CCP). His research bridges institutional economics, law & economics, and digital transformation, with a focus on governance structures, competition policy, and the societal impact of AI and big data.
Prüfer holds a PhD in Economics from Goethe University Frankfurt and has expertise in political economics, organizational behavior, and innovation. He is a Mercator Fellow at the University of Passau for his work on digital platform ecosystems and leads the EU Horizon project AI4POL (2025–2027), examining AI’s role in autocratic governance. His academic contributions span experimental economics, regulatory frameworks for digital markets, and the interplay between media and political outcomes.
Key research areas include the governance of data-sharing, privacy in big data contexts, and the economic analysis of standard-setting organizations. He has published widely in top journals such as the Journal of Law & Economics and Games and Economic Behavior.
Prüfer advises the EU Observatory on the Online Platform Economy and contributes to policy debates through his editorial roles at the Journal of Comparative Economics. His work emphasizes the ethical and societal implications of emerging technologies, particularly in autocratic regimes.
