Dr. Jennifer Lund is a Professor in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. She serves as Graduate Faculty in Global Health at the University of Washington and is a Member of both the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium and the Center for Innate Immunity and Immune Disease at the University of Washington.
Dr. Lund received her PhD and MS in Immunobiology from Yale University in 2006 and 2005, respectively, and her AB in Biology from Macalester College in 2001. Her immunobiology expertise centers on regulatory T cells (Tregs) and mucosal immunity to infections, utilizing both mouse models and human tissue samples. She investigates the dual role of Tregs in preventing autoimmune responses while facilitating immune responses against infectious agents, with particular focus on Herpes Simplex virus-2, West Nile virus, HIV, and Zika virus infections at mucosal barriers.
Dr. Lund's research program focuses on elucidating mechanisms of mucosal immune protection and immunoregulation during viral infections. Her lab currently pursues five major research directions: regulatory T-cell modulation of immunity to mucosal viral infections; identification of novel mucosal immune mechanisms for HIV-1 protection; the regulatory role of natural progesterone in barrier immunity; T-cell activation and exhaustion in the HIV-positive female genital tract; and immunogenetic determinants of HSV-2 infection and disease. Her work spans immunology, virology, mucosal biology, and immunogenetics with strong translational potential for vaccine development and infectious disease interventions.
Dr. Lund's research has been featured in Science Spotlight publications through 2025, highlighting her contributions to understanding T cell immunity in bacterial vaginosis, representative mouse models, HSV-2 infection dynamics, CD8 T cell activation, mucosal Treg responses, and regulatory T cell biology. As principal investigator, she leads a multidisciplinary research team that bridges fundamental immunological principles with clinical applications in mucosal immunity and viral pathogenesis.
