Jennifer Barlow is a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at the University of Virginia, where she has taught since Fall 2021. Previously, she served as a Lecturer at Longwood University (2016–2021) and Visiting Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University (2015–2016). She holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Spanish from the University of Virginia, with a dissertation on 'Iberian Daughters of Sappho: Female Friendship in Early Modern Spain' and an M.A. thesis on gender performance in Lope de Vega's La Dorotea.
Her research focuses on gender studies, friendship dynamics, and performance in early modern Spanish literature. She has published articles in Bulletin of Hispanic Studies and Hispanic Review, and contributed a chapter to Male and Female Friendship (Brill, 2020). She has organized panels at conferences like the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference and served as a guest editor for Miríada Hispánica.
Barlow has received numerous awards, including the 2017 Blackwell Scholar, 2014 Three Minute Thesis Finalist, and multiple fellowships from the Society of Fellows and University of Virginia. She has also presented at international conferences and translated academic works on Spanish theater history.
