Jayne M. Thompson is a Teaching Professor of English and Director of the Chester Community Writing Center at Widener University's College of Arts & Sciences. Her work bridges creative writing pedagogy with community engagement, particularly addressing systemic inequities in education and incarceration. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing (2010) from Fairleigh Dickinson University and an MA in English (1995) from West Chester University.
Her research focuses on narrative theory, juvenile justice reform, and the 'school-to-prison pipeline.' Thompson pioneered prison education initiatives at SCI Graterford and Chester High School, publishing student anthologies and advocating against mass incarceration. She received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award (2022) and Mellon Periclean Leadership Grant (2020) for integrating civic engagement into curricula.
Thompson directs the Chester Community Writing Center and co-founded the World Split Open Story Collaborative for women. Her work spans community literacy programs, Mayor’s Advisory Council roles, and collaborations with Chester Cultural Corridor initiatives. Widener Magazine highlighted her transformative teaching methods that empower marginalized voices through writing.
