Professor Tobi Jacobi holds a joint appointment in the Department of English and the English and University Composition Program at Colorado State University (CSU). As Assistant Chair of English and Director of the Community Literacy Center (CLC), she specializes in community literacy studies, composition theory, and feminist pedagogy. Her research focuses on prison literacy programs, ethics of university-community collaborations, and incarcerated women's writing. Jacobi earned her B.A. in English Education from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Ph.D. in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric from Syracuse University.
Her work emphasizes socially engaged literacy practices, including directing the CLC which partners with local communities. Recent projects include curating literacy remix projects blending archival prison texts with contemporary pedagogy. Jacobi has co-edited special journal issues on prison writing and authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters addressing prison education, feminist methodologies, and critical pedagogy.
Publications highlight themes like self-care for prison program volunteers, ethical representation of incarcerated writers, and challenges in sustaining prison college programs amid austerity. Current research explores post-GED adult literacy pathways and the role of writing in activism. Her collaborative approach integrates academic scholarship with grassroots community initiatives.
