Jessica B. Guzman is an Assistant Professor and Co-Coordinator of the Creative Writing Program at Widener University. She holds a PhD in English (Creative Writing Emphasis) from the University of Southern Mississippi, an MFA from West Virginia University, and a BA from the University of South Florida. Her research focuses on poetry, poetics, and global literary forms, with a particular emphasis on immigrant, Latinx, and Caribbean literatures. Her award-winning poetry collection Adelante explores themes of place, loss, and resilience.
Dr. Guzman is affiliated with Widener's Creative Writing, English, and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies programs. She chairs Poetry and Poetry Studies for the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association and serves on the masthead of Memorious journal. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes connecting writing to community, self, and other texts through collaborative workshops.
Recent recognitions include selection as a Periclean Faculty Leader (2023), funded to develop a new civic-engagement course, and participation in Swarthmore's Mellon Foundation-supported Humanities Leadership Development Program (2023). Her poetry appears in Shenandoah, the Academy of American Poets' Poem-a-Day, and other notable venues.
