Sean Frederick Forbes serves as Associate Professor and Director of Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Connecticut. An award-winning poet and editor, Forbes teaches poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and literary studies with focus on Afro-Caribbean, queer, and ethnic American literature.
His creative work explores themes of mixed-race identity, queer experience, cultural heritage, and historical memory. Forbes has authored the poetry collection Providencia (2013) and edited anthologies including The Beiging of America (2017) examining mixed-race identities and What Does It Mean to Be White in America? (2016) exploring whiteness narratives.
Honors include the Nutmeg Poetry Prize (2017), Wallace Stevens Poetry Award (2009), and residential fellowship at UConn Humanities Institute. Forbes mentors graduate and undergraduate writers, advising honors theses in poetry and fiction. Recent poems address historical memory, cultural identity, and social cohesion through mythological and autobiographical frameworks.
As Director of Creative Writing, Forbes administers the creative writing program, coordinates literary prizes, and organizes public readings. His scholarship examines contemporary American poetry with emphasis on multicultural voices and hybrid identities.
