Jean Gallagher is a Professor and Co-Chair of the Technology, Culture and Society Department at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She also teaches in NYU’s College of Arts and Sciences Creative Writing program. Her work bridges literary creativity with academic rigor, specializing in poetry that engages with art history, religious themes, and existential inquiry.
Educated at Queens College (B.A., English) and the CUNY Graduate Center (Ph.D., English), Gallagher is an award-winning poet with three collections: Start, Stubborn, and This Minute. Her poems have appeared in prestigious venues like The New Yorker and FIELD.
Her research explores intersections between poetry and visual arts, particularly medieval and Renaissance religious art. Recent work examines how sacred imagery influences contemporary poetic expression. Her writing often features layered metaphors and meditative structures that challenge traditional narrative forms.
Award highlights include the FIELD Poetry Prize (2018) and the Poets Out Loud Prize (2015). Her creative process is deeply informed by academic study, creating a unique fusion of scholarly insight and artistic innovation.
