Jaymin Kim is the T.T. & W.F. Chao Assistant Professor of Transnational Asian Studies at Rice University’s Department of Transnational Asian Studies. His research focuses on the Qing empire (1636-1912), analyzing interstate relations in early modern Asia through pan-Asian sources and interdisciplinary methods. He teaches global history courses emphasizing intra- and inter-regional connections in Asia.

His current book manuscript, Elastic Sovereignty in Early Modern Asia, examines how the Qing empire and tributary states like Chosŏn Korea, Lê/Nguyễn Vietnam, and Kokand managed refugees and criminals. He is also developing a second book project using archival sources to narrate modern Chinese history in an 'on this day' format.
Kim actively engages interdisciplinary communities through roles such as president of the Manchu Studies Group and Twitter projects like #ManchuOfTheDay and #TodayinQing.
