Jason Bates, Ph.D., is a Professor of Medicine and Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Vermont (since 1999) and an Adjunct Professor at McGill University. He specializes in respiratory physiology, pulmonary diseases, and biomedical engineering, with a focus on lung mechanics, asthma, and mechanical ventilation technologies.
- 1978: B.Sc. in Physics, Canterbury University
- 1981: Ph.D. in Medicine, Otago University
- 1994: D.Sc., Canterbury University
His research spans computational modeling of lung function, ventilator-induced injury, and obesity-related asthma. He has developed patented technologies for lung measurement and mechanical ventilation. He has served on editorial boards of major journals and led multidisciplinary lung research training programs.
- Elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering
- IEEE Faculty of the Year Award
- University Scholar, University of Vermont
- Joseph Rodarte Award, American Thoracic Society
- Solbert Permutt Trailblazer Award
His active NIH-funded projects include studies on obesity-related asthma, multi-scale lung matrix modeling, and ventilator-induced injury prevention. He has mentored numerous researchers and led the Meakins-Christie Laboratories at McGill University (1986–1999) and the School of Engineering at UVM (2010–2014). His patents include innovations in pulmonary diagnostics and ventilator technology.
