Carrie Perlman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. She directs the Lung Mechanics Laboratory, which combines mechanics, physiology and biophysics to understand ventilation injury in edematous lungs.
Her research focuses on:
- Mechanisms of ventilation-induced lung injury (VILI)
- Surface tension effects in flooded alveoli
- Development of surface-tension lowering therapies
- Respiratory distress treatment strategies
- Experimental pulmonary mechanics
Dr. Perlman's lab has developed novel methods to measure alveolar surface tension and demonstrated how intravenous sulforhodamine B can reduce lung injury. She also designed a low-cost ventilator system for mass respiratory failure scenarios.
She teaches undergraduate biotransport and graduate cardiopulmonary mechanics courses, and directs the Biomedical Engineering PhD program.
