Janne Cleveland is an Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) at Carleton University’s Department of English Language and Literature, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She currently serves as Acting Associate Dean, Student Affairs and Enrollment. Her academic background includes a B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University, an M.A. from York University, and a PhD from Carleton University.
Research interests focus on contemporary drama/performance, theatre history, puppetry, critical theory, and psychoanalytic theory’s intersection with performance. Her current work examines Betroffenheit (2015), a theatre-dance collaboration addressing trauma’s sociopolitical dimensions through psychoanalytic frameworks.
Key professional affiliations include the Canadian Association of Theatre Research (CATR), Prix Rideau Awards jury, and New Ottawa Critics Advisory Board. She has directed/assisted in productions like Good Grief! (2017), East of Berlin (2012), and Come Back to the Five and Dime (2010).
Publications span Canadian theatre analysis and puppetry studies, with articles in Canadian Theatre Review and edited volumes. Conference presentations address postdramatic performance, national identity, and familial abjection in drama.
