Janet L. Pritchard is a Professor of Photography, Area Coordinator, and Graduate Advisor in Photography at the University of Connecticut’s School of Fine Arts. She is also an Affiliated Faculty Member of the Center for Environmental Sciences & Engineering and the Institute of the Environment. Her work bridges art, environmental science, and history through landscape photography, emphasizing historical empathy and archival research.
Educated at the University of Colorado (B.A. in Art History, Classics, and Philosophy) and the University of New Mexico (M.A. and M.F.A. in Photography), Pritchard’s research explores regional landscapes as cultural and temporal narratives. Projects include Abiding River: Connecticut River Views & Stories, More than Scenery: Yellowstone, an American Love Story, and Dwelling: Expressions of Time, which investigate the interplay between nature, culture, and history.
Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Connecticut Office of the Arts Fellowships, and residencies at prestigious institutions like the Ucross and Jentel Foundations. Her work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, RISD Museum, and the International Center for Photography.
Pritchard has taught at institutions including Tyler School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her current research emphasizes the Connecticut River as an interconnected ecosystem, integrating historical and scientific perspectives.
