Judith Thorpe is a Professor of Photography and former Department Head in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Connecticut’s School of Fine Arts. She has held leadership roles including MFA Program Director, Senior Associate Dean at Tyler School of Art, and Executive Director of the Society for Photographic Education. Thorpe’s research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and art history, particularly through photographic series like The Passions (exploring female iconography) and Breathing the Everyday (a visual haiku on domestic life). She has been awarded grants from the Connecticut Arts Council, UConn’s Research Excellence Program, and the Banff Center.
Her education includes an MFA in Photography from the University of Colorado Boulder and a BS in Psychology from Regis College. Thorpe’s work has been exhibited globally, including at the New York International Fine Art Fair, New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Atlanta Gallery of Photography. She has undertaken residencies at the Millay Colony, Banff Centre, and collaborative projects at Hadrian’s Wall in England.
Thorpe’s grants and fellowships include the 2019 Collaborative Artist Fellowship for the Hadrian’s Wall project. Her artistic awards span over three decades, reflecting her contributions to contemporary photography and feminist art. She has served on prestigious boards such as the College Art Association and National Association of Schools of Art & Design.
