Jan Trosien is a Doctoral Researcher in Ancient History at the University of Hamburg's Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). His research focuses on inscriptions containing legal regulations in Ancient Athens, examining their material qualities and communicative roles within the polis. He is part of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (UWA) under Research Field B07.
- Education: Master of Arts (MA)
Research Interests: Trosien investigates how legal inscriptions in Athens functioned as written artefacts, analyzing their visibility, readability, and comprehensibility. His work challenges traditional views on the symbolic vs. functional roles of inscribed laws.
Projects: His dissertation project, 'Communicating a Code of Conduct,' explores the intersection of procedural law and materiality in Athenian inscriptions. He is affiliated with UWA, a multidisciplinary initiative studying manuscript cultures.
