Jana Franke is a Doctoral Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) of the University of Hamburg. She is affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA) under project RFB04, focusing on medieval European painted portraits and their inscriptions.
- Research Focus: Franke’s work explores the semantic reference systems of inscriptions on medieval portraits, analyzing their interplay with visual elements and connections to memento mori/vanitas themes, epitaphs, and manuscript traditions.
