Sara Chiarini is a researcher and Privatdozent (PD Dr) at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). She holds dual affiliations within the university: the 'B Inscribing Spaces' research group and the Department of Sinologie (Chinese Studies), though her primary research focuses on Classical Studies and Ancient Material Culture. Her work emphasizes the materiality and ritual context of ancient texts, particularly curse inscriptions and divinatory practices. Chiarini has led projects like the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (UWA), exploring the intersection of textual objects and cultural heritage.
Her research interests span ancient curse tablets, Greco-Roman religious practices, and the analysis of inscriptions. Recent projects include studying lead tablets from Athenian cemeteries and investigating Lucian of Samosata’s critiques of divination. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary debates on material culture through publications, conferences, and workshops.
Chiarini’s academic activities include organizing seminars on ritual agency and delivering guest lectures on textual materiality and oral-literary transitions. Her work bridges archaeology, philology, and cultural studies, with a focus on how ancient societies encoded meaning through physical objects and inscriptions.
