Dr. Charlotte Spence is a Departmental Lecturer in Ancient History at New College, University of Oxford. She holds a PhD from the University of Exeter, where her thesis explored conceptions of the dead and gods in ancient curse tablets. Her research focuses on ancient curse tablets, epigraphy, and religious practices in Late Antiquity. She co-edits Lived Realities in Ancient History and is preparing a monograph on Judeo-Christian inscribed curses in Late Antiquity.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Greek and Roman history, such as 'Thucydides and the Greek World' and 'Polybius, Rome and the Mediterranean.' She convenes modules on Alexander the Great and co-teaches classical archaeology courses. Previous teaching includes material evidence studies on Pompeii and tyranny in ancient Greece.
Publications emphasize curse tablets’ role in religious and social contexts, spanning Greek, Latin, and Carthaginian examples. Her work bridges textual analysis with material culture, contributing to debates on magic, personal religion, and superhuman communication in antiquity.
