Dr. Nicolas Wiater is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Classics, University of St Andrews. He holds a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Bonn, with postdoctoral studies at institutions including Frankfurt, Pisa, and Cambridge. His research focuses on Greek literature and culture, particularly Greek narratives of Roman history and literary criticism in the late Hellenistic and early Imperial periods. He has published extensively on figures like Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Polybius, exploring themes of cultural identity and historiography.
Teaching spans Greek and Latin literature, including Honours modules on Ancient Greek language history and early Greek poetry. His work often intersects with history, archaeology, and interdisciplinary projects like the Visualising War initiative, which examines representations of conflict in antiquity. He has supervised multiple doctoral students and received awards such as the 2018 Teaching Excellence Award.
Key projects include edited volumes on Greek identity and a Leverhulme Fellowship examining Polybius’ narrative of Hannibal’s march. His current research includes a monograph on Polybius’ Third Book for OUP and a German translation of Dionysius’ Roman Antiquities.
