Christopher A. Baron is an Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Classics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Illinois Wesleyan University. His research focuses on Greek and Roman historiography, Hellenistic history, and Greek epigraphy. He serves as General Editor of the three-volume Herodotus Encyclopedia (Wiley, 2021) and is working on a monograph, Greek Historians under the Roman Empire.
His teaching includes courses on ancient Greek history, historiography, and language. He has advised numerous master’s theses and serves on dissertation committees for students at multiple institutions. Awards include the ISLA Large Henkels Grant (2023) and the William Penn Fellowship (University of Pennsylvania, 2001–2005).
Baron’s scholarly work spans monographs, edited volumes, and articles on ancient historians like Herodotus, Polybius, and Cassius Dio. His research explores communication in Alexander’s empire, historiographical methods, and the intersection of ancient history and literature. He actively participates in academic service roles, including editorial board memberships and grant review panels.
