Jamila Minga is an Associate Professor at Duke University with affiliations in Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences, Neurology, and Psychology and Neuroscience. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (2014). Her research focuses on communication impairments post-right hemisphere stroke, particularly apragmatism and pragmatic language disorders. She co-developed the RHDBank database, a critical resource for studying discourse after stroke.
Key research interests include right hemisphere stroke rehabilitation outcomes, diagnostic markers for communication disorders, and intersectionality in health disparities. She has received grants from NIH and NIDCD, including a 2022-2027 study on language production using lesion-symptom mapping. Awards include the 2024 ASHA Media Champion Award for her documentary RHD: Hidden Diagnosis and the 2022 Katharine G. Butler Trailblazer Award.
Her lab, Minga Right Hemisphere Communication Lab, emphasizes community engagement and survivor-focused research. Notable collaborations include work with NCCU and PBS. Current grants include a role in a TTP clinical trial readiness study and mentorship in the Otolaryngology Surgeon-Scientist Program.
