Dr Jamie Coates is a Senior Lecturer in East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield’s School of Languages, Arts and Societies. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the Australian National University, with a dissertation on emergent Chinatowns in Tokyo. His research focuses on cultural anthropology of China and Japan, exploring themes of technology, mobility, and imagination in urban Northeast Asia. Coates has lived and worked extensively in East Asia, including roles as a researcher at Waseda University (JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow) and Sophia University (MEXT Scholar).

Research Interests: Coates examines how migration, media, and digital technologies reshape interpersonal relations and national imaginaries in Sino-Japanese contexts. His work spans cultural anthropology, urban studies, and media ethnography, with a focus on gender, consumption, and transnational mobility. Key themes include:

Teaching: Coates teaches modules including Understanding China 1, Contemporary Chinese Society, and Mass Culture and Digital Society in East Asia. He emphasizes collaborative, research-led pedagogy, encouraging students to engage with global debates.
Advisory Work: Supervises master’s and undergraduate research on topics like Chinese popular culture, migration, and social theory. Prior supervision topics include gender dynamics in East Asian contexts and transnational minority experiences.
