Dr. James Whiteford is a Reader in Extracellular Matrix Biology and Director of Graduate Studies at Queen Mary University of London's William Harvey Research Institute, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He leads the Whiteford Lab within the Centre for Microvascular Research, focusing on angiogenesis and its role in diseases like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and eye disorders. His research aims to develop therapies for Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and arthritis, with a focus on syndecan receptor signaling.
Education: BSc (Applied Biology, King's College London, 1994), PhD (King's College London, 1998). Postdoctoral research at Imperial College London and Copenhagen University. Academic progression: Lecturer (2014), Senior Lecturer (2016), Reader (current).
Research interests include inflammation, therapeutic innovations, and ophthalmology. Awards include the Arthritis Research UK Career Development Fellowship (2009). He edits journals like the British Journal of Pharmacology and collaborates with institutions in Finland and the UK.
