James Bainbridge is Professor of Retinal Studies at University College London (UCL) and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His research focuses on developing novel molecular and cellular therapies for retinal diseases, spanning laboratory investigations to clinical trials.
- Education: PhD in Genetics (UCL), MBBS (St Mary's Hospital Medical School), MA (University of Cambridge)
Research interests include gene therapy for inherited retinal disorders, retinal disease mechanisms, and surgical innovations. Recent work highlights AAV vector development for Leber congenital amaurosis and X-linked retinitis pigmentosa.
Scientific awards include the 2018 Champalimaud Vision Award and election to the UK Academy of Medical Sciences (2020). He supervises PhD students and teaches clinical ophthalmology, gene therapy, and microvascular biology at UCL.
